SolarEdge: “We are the global inverter leader in terms of revenue”

Petr Klimek, Country Manager CEEE & Scandinavia at SolarEdge, has been interviewed by IB Centre.

Petr, please tell our readers about the new products, technologies, and solutions which your company offers on the global renewable energy market this year.

SolarEdge developed the DC optimized inverter solution for the solar industry that changed the way power is harvested and managed in PV systems. The SolarEdge intelligent inverter solution maximizes power generation while lowering the cost of energy produced by the PV system to improve ROI. This is achieved by splitting the inverter functionality into two in which MPPT is moved to the module level by using power optimizers, while conversion and grid interaction remain at the central level in a simplified inverter.

In the Ukrainian market, we will specifically be providing three-phase DC optimized inverters for the residential and the commercial sectors up to 1 MW that falls under FiT.

What were the key achievements of SolarEdge in 2018 and in 2019?

SolarEdge is a global leader company in smart energy. With increasing revenue, we are the global inverter leader in terms of revenue. Just in the past quarter, SolarEdge achieved record revenue of $325M, up 19.5% QoQ and 43.1% YoY. Simultaneously, we have continued to expand, both diversifying into new geographical regions and energy markets.

Which of your products/solutions/serviceswere best sellers in the first 6 months of 2019? Why?

As a new entrant to the Ukrainian PV market, it is too early for us to carry out this type of analysis. However, we are focusing on the three-phase residential market and the commercial market up to 1 MW that falls under FiT. For the commercial sectors, we offer power optimizers that support a 2 module to 1 power optimizer configuration for increased scalability and three phase inverters with synergy technology, which combines large capacity with ease of installation, which reaches up to 100kW. While for the residential sector, we offer power optimizers per panel and three phase inverters.

What everyone must know about sustainable energy today?

One of the most important things to know about the sustainable energy industry is that PV systems should be considered a long-term investment. When evaluating what type of system to install, it is crucial to understand what can improve the return on investment. Some key questions to ask during the decision-making process are: “Which system will provide more energy over the system lifetime?”, “Which system offers more value?”, for instance – “Is safety and monitoring embedded?”, “Which components have more impact on cost than just the initial upfront cost?” As PV systems age and markets mature, stakeholders are realizing the importance of features such as module-level monitoring that can improve system uptime and decrease O&M costs.

In your opinion, what are the main peculiarities of the local Ukrainian market in comparison with the markets of other countries your Company works on?

With the new FiT scheme and improved conditions for PPA, Ukrainian PV market has seen quick growth over the past year and a half. From my personal experience with training PV installers throughout Europe, I have found that Ukrainian installers ask very poignant and technical questions, demonstrating their aptitude and knowhow.

What are you going to showcase at the SEF 2019 trade show?

At the SEF 2019 tradeshow, SolarEdge will present its DC optimized inverter solution. We will focus on introducing the benefits of DC optimized inverters to the market, such as more energy, increased design flexibility, enhanced safety, and improved insight into system production. We will showcase our commercial solution, which is ideal for PV installations up to 1 MW under FiT. While we will not have our own booth at the fair, Altek (#B23) and Solarity #F19 will present SolarEdge’s products in their booths. Solarity will show the SE82.8k, SE27.6k, commercial power optimizer, monitoring solution.

What do you think about digitalization in the sustainable energy sector?

The world is going digital, so the energy industry should go digital too – especially the solar energy industry, which can benefit from digitization in power conversion, monitoring, and smart energy management at both grid and site level.

What are our Company’s expectations from the SEF 2019 KYIV event?

SolarEdge considers SEF 2019 to be an important event for the beginning of its activity in the Ukrainian PV market. It offers us a good opportunity to improve brand awareness, develop new relationships and business opportunities, and introduce the benefits of SolarEdge’s solutions to the local market.
