In 2019, increase in the number of home photovoltaic power stations, most of which will be rooftop, is expected. According to the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine, 4440 solar power stations were installed by the Ukrainian households last year – their total number exceeded 7500 (in 2014 there were only 20 of them). Vitaliy Daviy, CEO of IB Centre, states that since 2015, more than EUR 72 mln has been invested in installation of small home solar power stations.
Such a rapid growth is evident for Solar Steelconstruction, a company which designs and manufactures mounting systems for the rooftop power stations. The company’s data reflects this market tendency. This article is about the peculiarities of solar panel roof mounting systems, an important component of each rooftop power station construction, will be especially helpful for beginners.
Why pay attention to the correct installation of solar panel roof mounting systems?
The properly mounted and installed system of fixing solar module is the basis of reliable and durable operation of your solar station as well as rapid return on investment. When choosing mounting systems, pay attention to the structure’s strength and the quality of the roof where you plan to install your power station. You should keep in mind that improperly constructed roofing and insecure structures can damage both the new item and the integrity of the roof and the house as a whole.
When constructing a rooftop power station, it is worth paying attention to the correct installation of roof panel mounting systems. Types of mounting systems
There are 3 main types of mounting systems – using:
- Aluminum profiles;
- Hot dip galvanized steel profiles;
- Galvanized coil profiles made of galvanized roll.
When constructing a rooftop power station, you should pay special attention to the area where you plan to install the solar structure. It is the roof that determines the number of solar panels, that is, the future power station’s capacity. We suggest getting down to business and solving a simple task.
Let’s pass on to the following example:
You have a rooftop solar power station with a total capacity of 10 kW (it is a standard capacity for rooftop solar station) with a sloping roof type.
For such capacity, 35 photovoltaic modules (PV) of 285 watts each are required. The area of the 1st such module is 1.6 sq. m.
Let’s calculate the area of the roof:
35 PV * 1.6 sq. m = 56 sq. m of free roof area without ducts, antennas and any other obstacles.
The result is:
Such rooftop power station will occupy 60 sq. m of the roof area, taking into account the gangways between its photovoltaic modules.
Where to place a rooftop power station?
On the face of it, everything appears simple: a rooftop power station is placed on the house’s roof. But how effective and profitable will it be?
In fact, to place it properly, you should take into account its orientation towards the sides of sunlight. This is an important factor. If you have a flat roof, then, as a rule, the angle of slope should be 20-30 degrees – this is the optimal angle for solar modules installation.
When placing your photovoltaic modules on type of roof, you should also pay attention to the following factors:
- a small angle of slope of the modules can significantly reduce their wind area (surface exposed to the wind). This will help reduce the load on the roof itself;
- snow load on the building decreases;
- getting rid of the modules’ mutual overshadowing.
The roof mounting systems are a cross-functional technical solution that allows creating structures of any configuration from profiles of the same type to install solar modules on any type of surface.
Aluminum profiles are made of aluminum alloy AlMg0,7Si according to GOST (National State Standard) 22233-2001 with anticorrosion anodizing coating in accordance with ISO 7599: 1 983. Steel profiles are made of steel C235 / C355 grade according to GOST (National State Standard) 27772-88 with anticorrosion coating by hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with ISO 1461: 2009.
