Energinet, the Danish national transmission system operator for electricity and natural gas, considers the traditional storage of electricity in electric storage batteries to be too expensive. According to the operator’s System Perspective Report by 2035, it plans to use hydrogen balloons for storage of store surplus electricity from RES.
This method, called Power-to-X (PtX), is suitable for long-term electricity storage and makes its exportation much easier. It allows converting all surplus electricity, generated by wind and solar stations, to pure hydrogen that can be used as fuel.
Being a true revolution in the energy sector, this technology is predicted to bring enormous profits to investors of such PtX plants.
