First Solar Power Plant in Antarctica

The solar power plant with a total capacity of 30 kW, consisting of 105 PV panels manufactured by Aleo Solar GmbH, has been recently installed on an Australian station “Casey” at the South Pole.

The power plant is expected to generate electricity that will be enough to cover about 10% of the  Antarctic station’s annual needs in electricity. The solar power plant will reduce the station’s dependence on diesel generators and allow reducing fuel costs and emissions of harmful substances to air.

It is planned to connect the panels to a battery storage system and find out whether solar energy can also be used at other Australian Antarctic stations.
